How to: make the most of your balcony

How to: make the most of your balcony

The teams on Three’s The Block NZ embraced outdoor living as they transformed their terraces this week. The finished spaces are perfect for entertaining and relaxing—and have us counting down to summer barbecues! A home with a balcony provides a place to retreat and relax outdoors. Here are our top tips to help you get the most out of your balcony.

Create an urban jungle

Plants make any space look and feel complete—especially in outside spaces. For ultimate jungle vibes, opt for a selection of plants in different heights and types. Add colour with vibrant blooms or go for kitchen herbs you love to cook with. Plant a selection in a Harvest Planter or Grow Plant Pot—both designs come in a range of colours and sizes.

Keep things cosy

If space allows, a balcony is a great spot to entertain friends and family. Plush cushions and warming throws are must-have when hosting guests in your outdoor space during the cooler months. Place a classic seat squab on chairs and complement with brightly coloured seasonal cushions. Keep a selection of throws on hand for guests to snuggle up in if they get cold. You can keep these tidily stowed away in a basket—such an iconic Korbo basket. Balconies are also the perfect place to pass the day by in a summery bean bag.

Light it up

Decorate your outdoor space with fairy lights or candles to create an intimate late-night ambience. Keep candles safe from breezes by placing them in a glass lantern. If you prefer a modern look, opt for the sleek Illuminado hurricane lamp. Alternatively, the Illuminado lantern creates more of a rustic look with its carry handle. Arrange a cluster of different sizes and styles to form a twinkling focal point.

 Go up the walls

Make the most of available space by adorning the walls—and even the roof—of your balcony. Display cascading plants from hanging baskets and planters. Tall plants like bamboo can create a natural ‘wall’ if you have an apartment balcony right up against your neighbour’s. Create laid-back island vibes by hanging a hammock chair from your roof—it will be summer’s most sought-after reading nook.
