Q&A : the secret to creating a bedroom retreat

Q&A : the secret to creating a bedroom retreat

As the ‘nest’ of your home, a master bedroom is a place to rest and unwind. A well-styled sanctuary should look luxurious and create calm, cosy and relaxing feelings.

Lisa & Ribz from Three’s The Block NZ were quick to learn after a one-on-one consultation this week with Città stylist Federica Contardi. After an uncertain start, the Wellington couple walked away with their first-ever room reveal victory.

We chatted to Federica to find out what advice she gave Lisa & Ribz to creating a cosy master bedroom.

Renovating a room can feel overwhelming. Where’s the best place to start?

Before Lisa & Ribz came in, I prepared a few mood boards for inspiration. Going over these with them helped us to better understand their taste as a starting point before helping them create their look.

Do you have any bedding tips and tricks? How can you create a luxurious bed?

Details make the difference! I talked to Lisa & Ribz about the importance of layering. Integrate plenty of fabrics, cushions, bedspreads and throws to build layers of harmonious elegance and texture.

What Città bedding did Lisa & Ribz incorporate into their winning room?

The hero of the room is the Cotton Velvet Bedspread in Carbon. Lisa & Ribz decided to go with a natural tone on the duvet cover, opting for the beautifully soft Sove Chambray Linen in Ash with matching pillowcases. Cialda Waffle Pillowcases in Charcoal add texture to the bed.

Is there such a thing as too many pillows and cushions?

Layers of cushions are essential but it’s important to always remember that, together with sleeping pillows, they shouldn’t take up more than a third of the total bed length.

What about a rug? How would you suggest styling this?

A rug helps to define the focal point of the room and centres attention on the bed as you walk into the space. The rug’s longest edge should be centred with the bed and should extend about 40cm either side. About a quarter of the rug should show from the end of the bed.

We also spied Città products in Lisa & Ribz’ equally impressive ensuite. Can you talk us through these?

Lisa & Ribz were fans of Compagnie de Provence’s natural skin and body care. The range is beautifully presented and incorporates delicate fragrances created in Grasse, France—the world’s capital of perfume. The Black Tea Hand Cream, with its dark glass bottle, helped to continue the bedroom’s theme to the bathroom.

What styles and colours are people loving right now?

We’re seeing a lean towards colours in forest tones, with darker blues and greens. These tones create relaxing environments—making the space a reflection of a natural panorama and conjuring calming feelings of being close to nature. Eco sustainability is a key focus, which is why natural fibres and materials are a preference.

Your advice was a game-changer for Lisa & Ribz. How can others book in for a one-on-one styling consultation?

We love doing styling consultations with our customers, from smaller projects such as styling sofas through to full home makeovers. Our in-store styling consultations are free and can be booked in-store or online. Some customers prefer an at-home style consultation, where a Citta stylist will visit to scope the space, define unique needs, and come back with a presentation that reflects their tastes and lifestyle. There is a small $100 charge for this service that is refunded on purchases more than $1000. Our website has all the information—or pop into one of our stores to have a chat!

Federica Contardi also provided Newshub Digital with expert tips to recreate Lisa & Ribz’s winning master bedroom and ensuite. Check out the article here.
